graduated from Brevard Institute High School in 1921, and Duke University Law School, in 1925 with an A.B., and J.D. in 1929 from that same institution. While in law school, he was inducted into the Order of Coif, which is the highest honor attainable by a law student. He was also Manager and Editor of the student paper, The Chronicle. He was North Carolina intercollegiate tennis champion in 1927. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He retired in 1986 after practicing law for over 50 years in Shelby, North Carolina. He received a certificate of merit from the U.S. Congress for voluntary service to administration of the selective service system under presidents Truman and Roosevelt. He also received recognition for patriotism, fidelity, and ability for service on the Government Appeals Board.

Adam spent his early life in Randolph Co., NC. Land grants in Randolph County, NC, were entered or issued under his name in 1799, 1806, and 1823. He and his family moved out of Randolph County between 1821 and 1824. Within the next few years they were to arrive in Carroll County, Georgia, but not before a spending a short time in Tennessee. They arrived in Carroll County between 1824 and 1828.

Adam served in the 74th Regiment of Georgia Miliria. He served as a private in the volunteer company. The company was formed in Carroll County, Georgia, May 21, 1836 to suppress the Indians during the Creek War of 1836.

Shortly after Adam died, his wife Barbara, and most of the children were again on the move. They headed west into Arkansas. Some of them moved on into Texas, but his son Philip stayed behind in Georgia. Some of the children settled in Sevier County and Pike County, Arkansas. Some moved on into Texas, settling in Fannin County, and Kaufman County, Texas. His wife Barbara died in Fannin County, Texas around 1870.

Author's note: I did not find an1820 census report listing Adam and his family. He was in the 1810 Randolph Co., NC census, and in 1820 should have been in that same county. His first appearance in Georgia was in the 1830 census for Carroll Co. In that census, all his children are accounted for except Adam Jr. In the 15-19 age group, there was no male of Adam Jr's age listed. There was however a son listed in the 10 to 14 years age group. This is probably Adam Jr. If this is true, his birth would have been between 1816 and 1820.

Philip, his family, parents, brothers, and sisters, moved from Randolph County, North Carolina between 1821 and 1824. Within the next few years they were to arrive in Carroll County, Georgia, but not before a brief stay in Tennessee. They arrived in Carroll County between 1824 and 1828.
