| Note* | moved from Lincoln Co., NC to Washington Co., Va., between 1773 and 1777. His estate was settled there in 1806. After he died his family moved to Monroe Co., IN. Some of his descendants later moved into Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. The northern branches of the family can be distinguished from their southern relatives because they have retained the original 'd' as the last letter of the family name, while the southern branches end the family name with a 't'. It is said, by some researchers, that his surname was spelled 'Whisman'. The Washington Co., VA deed book #3, page 533-534, date 2 Oct 1806, gives a record of Paul's estate settlement listing his heirs.
Author's note: I have shown here a retyped copy of that deed, as presented in the book Andrew Whisennand, by Daphane Arlene Hoover, Walker, IA:
"This indenture made this 2d day of Oct 1806 between Caty Whisenant, widow and relict of Paul Whisenant, deceased, Henry Hoover and Barbara, his wife, Peter Whisenant and Polly, his wife, John Whitesell and Caty, his wife, John Whisenant and Betsy, his wife, George Whisenant, John Young & Susannah, his wife, and Betsy Whissnant, heirs and representatives of Paul Whisenant, deceased of the one part, and Jacob Whisenant, of the other part, witnessath that for and in consideration of the sum of $370 to the Paul Whisenant, deceassed, in his lifetime, paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged do bargain and sell to the said Jacob Whisenant and heirs forever a certain tract of land in Washington County, 150 acres on the waters of Sinking Creek, a north branch of Holston River, granted to the said Paul Whisenant by the Commonwealth of Virginia by Patent dated the 22d of October 1800...(description of tract)."

He voted for Lincoln in 1860. In 1876, he switched to the Greenback party, and had been an active member in that party until his death. It also lists the birth and marriage of Michael and Delila, and the births of their children. All the entries appear to have been made at the same time, in the same handwritting. Merlene Meldrem Whisenand doesn't know the location of the original Bible. Only three record pages remain. |
