Note*died from cancer of lungs and bladder. When he was a young child he and his family lived on a farm in Erie, Colorado. John was given away at around age of 4. After his father died I guess his mother was afraid that she could not take care of 3 children and found a home for him. Noah was old enough to work and help her and Charley the youngest was still nursing but John (in the middle) was given away. John ran away from this new home one night and returned home all scratched up and in tears. His mother did not try to give him away again after 1 CONT that. John quit school after 2nd grade to go to work. He worked in the coal mine when he was so young that the men would have to help him dump his load (he was too small to do it himself). He drove a team of two horses that pulled a slip (big shovel) loaded with dirt from the strip mine. He worked on his farm and in the coal mines in Arkansas until his leg was crushed by a cave in at the Majestic Coal Mine. A large rock that was 8' by 4' by 1 1/2 ' fell from the ceiling of the mine landing on him. A large rock was laying beside him on the ground protecting his head and body, this was all that saved his life. He was a hard worker and a no nonsense kind of guy. They enjoyed singing songs such as: 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot', 'Give Me That Old Time Religion', 'John Henry' and 'Sixteen Tons'. He rolled his own cigarettes to smoke and he may have had black lung from working in the coal mines. He had brown hair and Blue eyes. Agnes remembers growing up in the days before having indoor plumbing or out houses . They had to make trips to the corn field with a shovel for sanitation. They lived in several places : In Ziegler ,IL. from 1921-1925, In Midland, AR. , R.R. 2 , Hackett AR. , Slatenville, AR. , and a farm near Sugar Loaf Mountain.
