Note*John Davis Whisenant was a drummer boy for the Confederacy during the Civil War, joining just two days before his 16th. birthday. After the war, he moved to White County, Arkansas, where he was engaged in the mercantile business. Cholera taking the lives of his children forced him to Texas in 1898. There he operated a grocery store at Altman and farmed nearby. J. D. loved reading the Bible and the Dallas paper on his front porch. A deeply religious man, he was a deacon of the Baptist Church and a member of Odd Fellows. In later years, he and Mit, his second wife, moved to Carlton, Hamilton Co., Texas. John Davis Whisenant's iron hand, fairness, honesty and financial wisdom helped set a tone for a family for years to come. He died at Justin, Denton Co., Texas, where he had sought treatment for a tumor on his right temple. This tumor proved to be fatal for him.
