Note*11 August 1862, Emanuel enlisted as a private on August 11, 1862 at Bloomington, Monroe Co., Indiana, and mustered out at Washington D.C. June 9, 1865. He served in Company F, 82nd. Regiment. He was captured September 20, 1863, and paroled March 20, 1864. A story told about Emanuel was that while passing through Georgia on Gen. William T. Sherman's march to the sea, Emanual stopped at a farmhouse to buy a glass of buttermilk. A short time afterward, he was seized with violent cramps in the stomach and, as ascertained by his attending physician, nearly died of arsenic poisoning. His Southern hostess had placed in his drink a generous dose of poison. Fortunately for Emanuel, soldiers were exposed to high levels of arsenic handling ammunition and such, although they did not realize it, and built up a certain tolerance.
