(Note: Does anyone know the identity of Gerald Whisenhunt? I do know that his son Richard was born 19 Mar 1970, in Dallas, Co., TX, and that Richard has a brother named Michael. Who are his parents?)

  • Harold Douglas Whisnant, (Family 1305), died 7 May 1993, in Morganton, NC. He was a retired farmer and cofounder and driver for the Mimosa Cab Co., in Morganton.
  • John Ray Whisnant, (Family 1405), died 29 Apr 1993, in Burke Co., NC. He served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. He owed and operated the Scenic Gulf service station.
  • Ruby Taylor Carswell, (Family 755vii), died 31 May 1993. She was born 14 Sep 1922, in Burke Co., NC. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee Carswell.
  • Charlie Cameron Whisnant, (Family 1362), died 2 Jun 1993, in Sebastian, FL. He was retired from the Army, serving from 1948 to 1969. He was also a Mason.

  • Corrie Ophelia Whisnant Jones, (Family 757), died 21 Jun 1993, in Charlotte, NC. She retired in 1973 as a cafeteria manager for Charlotte city schools after 20 years service.
  • Joe Fredrick Williams, (Family 2047), died 7 Jul 1993, in Morganton, NC. He died accidentally when a tree he was cutting down fell on him. Joe had been in the timber business all his life and was an experienced logger.

Chapman certified

This past summer Tracy Donald Chapman (Family 1408i), received his certification as a mobile intensive care nurse. Tracy works for the Valdese General Hospital Emergency Dept., in Valdese, NC. To receive his certification, he completed courses in Cardiac Life Support, Basic Trauma Life Support & Pediatric Advanced Life Support.

Hannas celibrate 50 years of marriage

Sidney L. Hanna & Edith Whisnant Hanna (Family 713ix), of the Oak Hill community, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 22. They were guests of honor at a gathering of family and friends in Hildebran, NC. Edith and Sidney were married on July 22, 1943 in Winchester, VA.

Judge Whisenant presides over Bobbitt trial

Judge Herman Arthur Whisenant Jr. (Family 2261), presided over the widely reported trial of Lorena Bobbitt in Manassas, Virginia. Lorena was being tried for maliciously wounding her husband. She was acquitted when the jury ruled she was temporarily insane.

In memory of

B. F. Jones, Ph.D.

Bobby Frank “B.F.” Jones, was born in Lincolnton, North Carolina to Corrie Whisnant Jones and Willie Glenn Jones. He received his A. B. degree from Wake Forest College and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Jones began his career at Tennessee Technological University in 1964. He was nominated for numerous teaching awards and was the recipient of a Distinguished Faculty Award in 1971. During the same year, he was named chairperson of the Department of History.

Through the years Dr. Jones influenced the lives of hundreds of students who passed through his classes with his love of History and his love of Tennessee Tech.

I never got to meet B.F. (Family 1372), but I did talk with him via telephone a few years back while doing research for my book. He was very interested in the work I was doing on our family history, and wanted me to keep him posted on how the research was going. When he received his copy of Whisnants Through The Ages, he told me he was very pleased.

Whisnant pursues career in Opera

Amy Caroline Whisnant (Family 1606iv), currently living in New York, is pursuing a career in opera. She has preformed in many performances including Mimi in La Boheme with Opera Memphis and Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana with the Indiana Opera Theatre. Her soprano voice has won her recognition. Amy has received numerous prizes for her performances including the MacAllister Competition, the Southeastern Metropolitan Opera Auditions and the Oratorio Society of New York Solo Competition.

Whisnant get VFW appointment

In November 1993, Joe Ben Whisnant (Family 1365), had been appointed by the V.F.W. poast in Morganton, NC to serve as a National Aide-de-Camp for 1993-94. Appointment as a National Aide-de-Camp recognizes outstanding service to the VFW.

What happened to Robert & Rachel Whisenant, and who are Henry & Martha Mowery?

According to the 1850 Montgomery Co. AR, Gap Twp. family #40-40, Robert Whisenant 35, Rachel 23, Newton C. 4, and Nancy A. 1. In the 1860 Polk Co., AR, Mountain Twp. family #241-230 Newton Whisenant 14, Adaline 11, Sarah 9, John 7, and George 3. The children are in the household of Henry Mowery 39 and Martha 35. Question: What happened to Robert and Rachel Whisenant? Reference in W.T.T.A. family 171, page 51. Who are Henry and Martha Mowery? Can anyone help me?

Who is the husband of Rubilee Whisenant?

I think she may be the wife of Ewing F. Whisenant (Family 10i, page 399), born May 1887, in Texas. I’m not so sure about this though. For one reason, there was a Franklin Ewing Whisenant, who died in Travis Co., TX, on 5 Mar 1906, or so the Texas Death Certificate Index says. This date may be in error.

The following is what I’ve been able to find out about Rubilee and her family thus far. Most of the information came from her obituary. If anyone knows anything more about Rubilee’s relation to the Whisenant family, please let me know. Thanks, Raymond C. Whisnant.

Rubilee was born 2 Nov 1902, in Hickman Co., KY. She died, 14 Jan 1994, in Pacific Grove, CA. She is burried in Crutchfield, KY. She came to Dallas in 1920, and lived here until 1983 when she moved to be with her daughter in California. She had an active career in Dallas which included abstract and title searches, and Clerk of Selective Service Boards during W.W.II. She had the following children:

  1. John Lee Whisenant. Born, 26 Jan 1925, in Dallas Co., TX. Died, 11 Aug 1972, in Los Angeles, CA.
  2. Franklin Ewing Whisenant. Born, 3 Sep 1927, in Dallas, Co., TX. Resides in Cedar City, UT. He married Norita (?).
  3. Sidney Ross Whisenant. Born, 18 Nov 1928, in Dallas, Co., TX. Resides in Dallas, TX. He married Velta E. Mailock, 13 Nov 1988, in Dallas Co., TX.
  4. Rose Mary Adale Whisenant. Born, 7 Aug 1930, in Dallas Co., TX. Resides in Pacific Grove, CA. She married into the Bolton family.

Whisenants to visit Europe

Several descendants of Huldy Clementine Whisenant (Family 52ii), will be making the Atlantic crossing to Europe soon. Cynthia Johnson, of Houston, Texas, and her family plan to make the trip in June. She says that they hope to visit the towns in Germany and Switzerland where our ancestors lived. If she’s as fortunate as I was on my trip to Europe last year, she’ll get to meet some of the Visinand descendants still living in that area of Europe.

Therefore, in many cases only part of the information is included. The rest will be saved for some possible future publication. She is buried in Salem cemetery, Ackerman, Choctaw Co., MS. She married James Wesley Johnson, circa 1864. James was born 5 Feb 1845, in TN. He died 14 Apr 1913.

Family 230v, Thomas Whisenand: His full name was Thomas Kent Whisenand. He was born 17 Jan 1870, in Lucas Co., IA. Died 9 Jan 1937, in Douglas Co., NE. He married Emma Weiss, 16 Mar 1898.

Family 230vi, Louisa Whisenand: Her full name was Sarah Louisa Whisenand. She was born, 20 Aug 1872, in Lucas Co., IA. Died, 3 May 1942, in Buchanan Co., MO. She married Hugh Dougherty, 31 Jan 1899.

Family 267, Thomas L. Whisenhunt: After comparing census records from 1860 through 1920, I have come to the conclusion that Thomas had been married prior to his marriage to Rutha Elizabeth Hale. I don’t yet know the name of his previous wife. I believe his first five children were from this first marriage. Thomas and Elizabeth also had another child named Jack, born circa 1883, in AR. Jack’s family can be found in the 1920 Montgomery Co., AR census. Jack’s mother Elizabeth is residing in the same household. She is listed as 77 years old, born in Alabama. The 1900 Montgomery Co. AL census shows her birth date as Apr 1845. Please make the correction in your book.

Family 348, Martin “Mortie” Whisenant: His full name was Martin Claywell Whisnant. (Note: The Obit. for his daughter Alice Whisnant Powell, shows her father’s last name without the “e” in the middle.

Family 418, Archibalt T. Whisnant: Archie was born, 11 Aug 1832.

Family 427viii, Margaret J. Whisonant: Her correct name is Margaret Isabella Whisonant. She was born 26 Aug 1860, died 7 Feb 1931. She married John Harris Wylie, 11 Jan 1882. John was born 16 Feb 1848, died 10 Oct 1914.

Family 442, William Hugh Whisenant: I show that the census listed William & family in Gillespie Co., TX, in 1880. This is incorrect, it should say Grayson Co., TX.

Family 464, Jefferson Barto Whisnant: After Jefferson died his second wife, Lou Cindy Sargent, married John Redmond. Lou Cindy died in 1961.

Family 464viii, Ada Whisnant: She married Burt “Bert” Lee.

Family 491, Samuel P. Whisenant: He was born 11 May 1847, in GA, died 22 Apr 1936, and is buried in Baptist Hill Cem., near Elijah, Ozark Co., MO. His second wife was Nancy (?), born 31 Aug 1849, died 21 Jan 1912. Samuel served in the Civil War in Co. K, 5th TN Mounted Infantry.

Family 641iv, Joe Frank Whisenhunt: Joe died, 1 Sep 1933, in Dallas Co., TX. Burial in Dry Creek cemetery, Kaufman Co., TX. He married Lottie Erma Norman. She was born, 9 Feb 1898, in Van Zandt Co., TX. Died, 7 Jun 1972, in Kaufman Co., TX. They had two children:

  1. Clarence Lowell Whisenhunt. Born, 15 Oct 1915, in Hunt Co., TX. Died, 24 Jun 1988, in Dallas Co., TX. Clarence married Helen Emogene Grissom, 25 Mar 1938. Born, 13 Mar 1921, in Atoka Co., OK. They had two children: Kenneth Wayne Whisenhunt, born, 18 Oct 1944, in Dallas Co., TX, and Barry Lynn Whisenhunt, born 30 Oct 1949, in Dallas Co., TX..
  2. Pearl Gray Whisenhunt. Born, 4 Jun 1920, in Kaufman Co., TX. She married Eddie Grady.

Family 645iii, Lois Carline Whisenhunt: Her middle name was Pauline. She was born in Baylor Co., TX. She married James Enoch Langford, 31 Oct 1924, in Cotton Co., OK.

Family 645iv, Kathrine Whisenhunt: Her middle name was Thelma. She was born 6 July 1910, in Baylor Co., TX. She married Homer Bailey Langford, 14 Feb 1928, in Yuma Co., AZ.

Family 793v, Velma Shafter Whisnant: He was married to Wilma O’Ham. There children are:

  1. Richard Brian Whisnant.
  2. Scott Allen Whisnant.
  3. Curtis Dean Whisnant.
  4. Donna Marie Whisnant.
  5. Wanda Denise Whisnant, Born, 28 Dec 1972.
  6. Bobby Eugene Whisnant, Born 4 Mar 1970.

    All the children were born in Morganton, NC, except for Scott, who was born in Valdese, NC. Wanda and Bobby were adopted by other families, and did not retain the Whisnant name. Wilma is now a Ms. Hensley, currently living in Indianapolis, IN.

Famiy 956, Swain James Whisnant: His wife Ruthie Maudell Lee was born 30 Jun 1923. Her parents were Wilburn Jackson Lee and Martha Mote.

Family 956ix, Edward Lewis Whisnant: He was born 26 May 1959, in Winder, GA, and died 20 Jan 1991. He is buried at Eastview Cem., Conyers, GA. (Note: In Addendum #2, page 2, I said Edward had a daughter named Lina. Her correct name is Tina.)

Family 956x, David Whisnant: His full name was David William Whisnant. He was born 25 Oct 1947, and died of Diphtheria on 5 Jul 1950. He is buried at Dry Pond, GA.

Family 1141, Fenner T. Whisenhunt: Fenner died, 16 Dec 1924, in Texanna, McIntosh Co., OK. He married, first, Tosa Nichols, 26 Nov 1911. She was born in 1925. Children:

  1. Vera V. Whisenhunt. Born, circa 1912, in OK. She married Jack Melkonian.

Fenner married, second, Alpha Lena (?) Whisenhunt. She was born, circa 1890, in AR. Died, 1922, in Texana, Mcintosh Co., OK. Children:

  1. Orville Cleopholus Whisenhunt. Born 4 Jan 1919, in Texana, OK. Died, 20 Jun 1978, in Seattle, WA. He married Lovine Orman, daughter of Samuel Orman and Florence May Parker, 19 Sep 1947, in Tulsa, OK. Divorce, 1960, in Tulsa, OK. She was born 22 Dec 1919. Died, 22 Nov 1976.
