Ned Whisnant

Ned McClendon Whisnant, 87, of East Commons Drive, Morganton, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Grace Hospital, following a brief illness. Born in Burke County on Sept. 30, 1920, he was the son of the late Frank Douglas Whisnant and Alice Mincey Whisnant. Ned was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Co. B 105th Engineers. He was owner of East Union Barbershop, which was later changed to Mastercut Hairstyling after he sold it to Dennis Whisnant. Ned continued to cut hair at the shop for many years. He was a faithful member of North Morganton United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees and always enjoyed being involved in other church activities. Mr. Whisnant is survived by his wife of 61 years, Amanda Norman Whisnant, of the home; a daughter, Norma Whisnant Roberts and husband, Robert, of the home; a very special niece, Carolyn Norman Williams of Morganton; nephews, Worth Whisnant and wife, Frances, of Morganton, Donald Whisnant and wife, Laura Beth, of Fayetteville, Billy N. Whisnant and wife, Debbie, of Morganton, Irie Whisnant and wife, Verlie, of Morganton, Jim Blankenship, of Morganton, and Sanford Norman and wife, Carolyn, of Morganton; a brother-in-law, Woodrow Norman; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Murphy; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Worth Sherrill Whisnant and Harold Douglas Whisnant; and sisters, Mary Sue Powell, Margaret Alice Whisnant and Ruth Ann Whisnant. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at North Morganton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tony Matthews, Paul Christy and Jim Taber officiating. Entombment will follow in Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum with military honors to be performed by Valdese American Legion Post No. 234. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Sossoman Funeral Home where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral.
