Bertha Whisnant

Mrs. Bertha Fortenberry Whisnant, 93, of 107 Otis Road, Casar, N.C., formerly of the Clarks Chapel Community in Lenoir, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 8, 1910, in Cleveland County, N.C., to the late Robert Chauncy Fortenberry and Lillie Price Fortenberry. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Harrison Whisnant; five brothers, Ray, Robert "Gene," Carl, Ben and Ed Fortenberry; and a sister, Mamie Cook.

Mrs. Whisnant was a homemaker and member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Casar, N.C.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph and Cheryl Whisnant of Taylors, S.C., Miller and Pat Whisnant of Laurel, Md., and Melvin Whisnant of Garner, N.C.; a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Greg Horne of Shelby; five grandchildren, Heather Cross of Chattanooga, Tenn., Nicole Hurst of Boston, Mass., Alicia Wyatt of Raleigh, Benjamin Horne of Lexington and Elizabeth Horne of Greensboro; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Sunday, Sept. 19, 2004, at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Jamie Bridges and Rev. Sam Snyder officiating. The body will lie in state from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 18, 2004, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home, and at other times the family will be at the home of Wanda and Greg Horne, 1180 Senic Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150.
