Mr. William Cullen Whisnant

Mr. William Cullen Whisnant, age 95, of Geneva died Sunday, August 3, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2014 in the chapel of Pittman Funeral Home in Geneva with the Reverend Dr. Chris Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. In lieu of flowers please make donations to your favorite charity.

Cullen was born August 1, 1919 in Camak, (Warren County), Ga. His family moved to Burnt Corn, Ala. in Monroe County where his father owned a sawmill. He then moved to Geneva in 1937 to work for his friend, David Skinner, who made him foreman of his sawmill.

He joined the US Army Air Corp in 1941. After the war he returned to Geneva and the sawmill. Upon Mr. Skinner's retirement, Cullen purchased the sawmill where he worked until his retirement in 1960. He later taught refresher courses in instrumentation to helicopter pilots for twenty-two years at Fort Rucker.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, flying and anything to do with electronics. Cullen was a ham radio operator, and was an engineer for WGEA for twenty-five years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Myrtle Bostic Whisnant; his parents, Dosie and B.C. Whisnant; and a brother, Bennie Whisnant.

He is survived by his son, Blan Whisnant (Shirley); two grandsons, Lee Whisnant and Chad Whisnant (Brooke); great granddaughter, Laine Victoria Whisnant, all of Geneva; and two step great granddaughters, Ashlyn Van Wert of Auburn and Lauren Van Wert of Geneva.
