Miles Andrew Whisnant, 84, of Union Mills, died Sunday, April 28, 2013, at Hospice House, Forest City. He was the son of the late Herman and Cleo Morrison Whisnant, and was also preceded in death by a sister, Sarah Whisnant Barnes. He was retired from Gayley & Lord in Marion after 35 years of service. He enjoyed the family tradition of making molasses in Cane Creek with his family for many years. He was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church. Miles was an Army Master Sergeant and served in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sue Bollinger Whisnant; daughter, Becky Dorsey and husband, Stan, of Union Mills; two grandchildren, Andy Dorsey, of Union Mills, and Allison Dorsey Kennedy and husband Josh, of Charlottesville, Va.; and a great-grandson, Jack Miles Kennedy. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, at Cane Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Danny Camp will officiate, and Andy Dorsey and Allison Dorsey Kennedy will each provide a eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites provided by the Rutherford County Honor Guard. The visitation will be from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. Washburn & Dorsey Funeral and Cremation Service is in charge of arrangements.
