Scipio Weldon Whisnant, III

MORVEN -- Mr. Scipio Weldon 'Zip' Whisnant, III, 89, died Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Funeral services will be 11:00am Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home, Wadesboro with Rev. Victor Potter officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.

The family will greet friends tonight, Tuesday, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the funeral home.

'Zip' was born March 25, 1921 in Anson County, NC, a son of the late Scipio Weldon Whisnant, Jr. and the late Georgia Mae Fort Whisnant. He was a master mechanic, working with both automobiles and boats and was retired from Glen Manufacturing in Morven. An avid fisherman, horseman and race fan, in his early years he enjoyed racing his car #1908. He was a member of Morven United Methodist Church.

He was a devoted family man. He and his wife, Marie Chandler Whisnant, were married for 65 years at the time of her death in 2006. Zip and Marie were inseparable and the family rejoices now that on Sunday they were reunited for eternity. He was also affectionately known by many as 'Pop.'

Surviving are his children, Zip Whisnant, IV and wife, Ann of Leland, Rosemarie Whisnant of Mooresville and John Whisnant and wife, Cheryl of Jacksonville, FL; his grandchildren, Rebecca Lane, Skip Whisnant, V, David Ruvolis, Chuck Ruvolis, Susan Spencer, John Whisnant, Jr. and Beth Hammond; and his 20 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his wife, his grandson, Tom Whisnant preceded him in death.
