Don S. Whisonant

Don S. Whisonant Lincolnton, NC Don S. Whisonant, 69, died Wednesday, January 5 at Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba County. Graveside service will be 2:00 Saturday, January 8 at Hollybrook Cemetery with Father G. Miles Smith, Rev. Deacon Barbara Burns, and Rev. Meg Skidmore officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Warlick Funeral Home 12:30 - 1:30. He was born February 26, 1941, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, the son of the late Irene and Paul Whisonant. Don is survived by his wife, Mary Hassell Whisonant of Lincolnton and Beaufort, SC, and a sister-in-law Barbara Duemler and her husband Dick of Washington, MO and cousins Lynn Ellis and her husband, Tim, of Shelby and their daughter Elizabeth Heilhack and husband, Kris of Charlotte. Don was a graduate of Lincolnton High School, 1959, UNC-Chapel Hill 1963 and UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry with a DDS, 1969. He served as a Lieutenant in the Navy Dental Corps 1969-1971 at Parris Island, SC and had a dental practice in Beaufort, SC 1972 until his retirement in 1992. Whisonant was an Eagle Scout (February 17, 1955) with a Silver Palm, and received the God and Country Award. While a youth member, he served as Senior Patrol Leader at the Scout Jamboree in Valley Forge, PA, 1957. He further served the Boy Scouts of America as Scout Master at the National Boy Scout Jamboree at Lorraine St. Park, PA, a District Representative to the Schiff Scout Reservation, NJ, was awarded the District Aware of Merit from the Low Country Council of BSA, received his Woodbadge and was Woodbadge Instructor. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Main Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092, or to the Historic Preservation Fund, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 315 N. Cedar Street, Lincolnton, NC 28092. Warlick Funeral Home is serving the Whisonant family.
