Joan Whisenant

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Collier-Butler Chapel for Joan Whisenant, 82, Gadsden, who died Monday, June 30, 2008. Dr. Craig Carlisle will officiate with private burial at Kyuka Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral and Cremation Services directing.

Mrs. Whisenant was a 1944 graduate of Etowah High School and received her nursing degree from the Holy Name of Jesus Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. Mrs. Whisenant retired with more than 50 years of dedicated service as a R.N. in the labor and delivery department at Holy Name of Jesus Hospital (Riverview). She was a member of Twelfth Street Baptist Church, the ABWA and the Mountain Laurel Club. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Pearl Thompson; brother, Charles Thompson; sister, Ogaleen Gwin; and daughter, Janice Whisenant Hinds.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Bigelow; son, Larry (Kelly) Whisenant; grandchildren, Jason (Sonya) Bigelow, Jenifer (Joe) Lovvorn, Houston Whisenant, Mary Ragan Whisenant, David Whisenant, Daniel Whisenant, Benjamin Hinds and Lindsey Hinds; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Bigelow and Jackson Lovvorn.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Research Fund UAB, 1720 7th Ave. S., Birmingham, AL 35294.

Pallbearers will be family.

Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Oak Landing Assisted Living Facility, Amedisys Hospice Services, Countryside Hospice, Dr. Jeremy Goodwin, Dr. B.J. Patel, Jerri Copeland and Janie Goodwin.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday at the funeral home.
