Helen Joyce Whisenand

WHISENAND -- Helen Joyce Whisenand, 86, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 22, 2005 due to complications from the flu virus. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Billy K. Whisenand; sister, Vera Forster of Farmington, NM; a dear friend, Anna Ramirez of Albuquerque; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and ---grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Margaret McDaniel; and two brothers, Joe and Thomas Harrison. Mrs. Whisenand was born in Roswell, NM on November 16, 1918 to Joe K. and Vera Brooks Harrison. She was a direct descendent of President William Henry Harrison. She attended Roswell High School and was a member of the school band. In 1942, she joined the WAAC's and took her basic training at Fort Des Moines, IA. Most of her military career was at Fort Leonardwood, MO. She was active in the USO as a singer and dancer. Mrs. Whisenand was First Sgt. of a WAC Motorpool detachment and a WAC Hospital detachment. She also worked for the Post Judge Adjutant and recorded court proceedings for the German POW's. Upon returning to Roswell, she did TV Commercials on the local KEFL TV Station. She was a Chaves County Deputy Sheriff and remained a member of the New Mexico Sheriffs and Police Association. Mrs. Whisenand was a lifemember of the DAV and was the first woman to become Post Adjutant of a DAV Post. Her favorite sports were fishing, hunting, and enjoying nature and wildlife. During her recent years, she was confined to an electric mobility scooter and took great pleasure in feeding the small birds and prairie dogs. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held Saturday, February 26, 2005, 3:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, Lomas Blvd. Chapel, 10500 Lomas Blvd. NE.
