Sallie Whisenant

Sallie Mae Brittain Whisenant, 85, formerly of Carbon City Road, Morganton, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Sunrise Rehab in Marion following a period of declining health. She was born on Feb. 10, 1923 in Burke County and was a daughter of the late Charles Edward Brittain and Sallie Elizabeth Poteat Brittain. Mrs. Whisenant was a retired employee of Grace Hospital and was a lifelong member of Morganton Seventh Day Adventist Church. She loved working in her flower garden. Surviving are her sons, Robert Worth Freeman and his wife, Trissie, of Old Fort, Timothy Dwayne Freeman and his wife, Brenda, and Theodore Wesley Smith Jr. and his companion, Jerri, all of Morganton; her daughters, Trecia Dean Smith and her husband, Joe, Connie Lynne Mitchell and her husband, Winston, and Robin Annette Horne and her companion, Tim, all of Morganton; 22 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whisenant was preceded in death by a daughter, Trixie Lee Ridley; a grandson, Ricky Lee Freeman; a granddaughter, Pamela Lee Farris; brothers, Paul, Charles, Harry and Ned Brittain; and sisters, Monnie Orders, Flossie Jarrett and Azalee Taylor. One of her grandsons, Jackie Edward Orders, has been missing for five years. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with Elder Tim Sheridan officiating. Burial will follow at the Seventh Day Adventist Cemetery.
