Note* | He was a civil engineer and superintendent for the railroad. He helped build bridges all over the south. He enlisted as a private in Company B, 43rd North Carolina Infantry. He was a tall, young teenager when captured at the Battle of Gettysburg. He spent the rest of the war on a prison ship anchored off 'Point Lookout', and when the war was over walked all the way home to Charlotte. Tom, like almost all of this branch of the family, was unusually tall at 6'8', according to other family members. It is also said that 'he had the bluest eyes you've ever seen.' |
