Note* | He graduated from Brevard Institute High School in 1921, and Duke University Law School, in 1925 with an A.B., and J.D. in 1929 from that same institution. While in law school, he was inducted into the Order of Coif, which is the highest honor attainable by a law student. He was also Manager and Editor of the student paper, The Chronicle. He was North Carolina intercollegiate tennis champion in 1927. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. He retired in 1986 after practicing law for over 50 years in Shelby, North Carolina. He received a certificate of merit from the U.S. Congress for voluntary service to administration of the selective service system under presidents Truman and Roosevelt. He also received recognition for patriotism, fidelity, and ability for service on the Government Appeals Board. |
